These words from one of the most popular and colourful Prussian kings in history speak thetruth. We are talking about King Frederick II, affectionately known by his people as ‘Old Fritz’. While it is not our intention to revive the state domains of ‘Old Fritz’ – also known as Frederick the Great – but rather switch to a modern parliamentary monarchy, there is a great deal of wisdom in this quote from ‘Old Fritz’. He perceived himself as the ‘first servant of the state’. Sweeping reforms were enacted under his rule. He reformed the education system, abolished torture and promoted trade and commerce. He was strongly influenced by the Enlightenment and ultimately ruled as an absolutist king.
The Mecklenburg princess Luise Auguste Wilhelmine Amalie Duchess of Mecklenburg married into this bloodline and became the most powerful woman in Prussia at the side of King Friedrich Wilhelm III, whose legacy in the 21st century has now fallen to me, Grand Duke Friedrich Maik. Let’s take a look at some pictures of this historical heritage, the capital of which is Königsberg.
